      Dude. Watching this documentary gave me even MORE appreciation for the KILLERRRRRRRRR vocals on I'm Back (to Rise!), Killer Instinct is my favourite video game of all time. I listened to Killer Cuts taped to a cassette on a boom box while I would fight my bodyboard on the trampoline pretending to be Jago so as soon as KI 2013 was announced, my instant thought was "I can't wait to see who does the music and what direction they take it in" and to see the entire soundtrack given nothing but love and respect, to see the detail that went into the tracks one by one, this has been amazing. Thank you for playing your part with Combo's theme, it's one of my favourites from the reboot! Also crazy to hear Mick's first CD was Killer Cuts and then the Mortal Kombat Soundtrack, that speaks volumes to his video game music sharing influences from sounds like Fear Factory and Orbital.

    My favorite track? Hands down, it's Herald of Gargos. It's got one of my best friends doing the vocals. Here's the full story, I was taking my morning poop, reading through Twitter when I saw Mick's tweet. I thought of two people, Chris and the vocalist for my band. Told Chris first, pushed him to do it because he loved the game so much. He had ZERO confidence that he'd get the gig. I'm glad he got it, what Mick said about him looking like he's never said a cuss word in his life isn't exactly true, but Chris is genuinely one of the most caring and nicest dudes that walks this planet. .

    TJ combo trailer was an absolute "alignment of the stars" miracle, a one in a lifetime event. Max comments on his videos they were working on his moves days before his trailer came out and he barely had weeks of work and they got something kind of functional to show. And the knowing now his music was a last minute crunch makes it even more epic

  • @Impalingthorn
    @Impalingthorn 3 года назад +88

    Reminder:
    People tried to paint Mick Gordon as some sort of two faced asswipe based on a couple tweets removed of context and nuance during the release of Doom Eternal.
    A lot of vitriol was slung his way for simply saying "I wouldn't have mixed it that way" and "I probably won't be working with Id again" and all of it came from people injecting those statements with drama and angst when really he was just saying he mixed things differently and wanted to work on other stuff.
    That didn't stop everyone from attacking Id until they got an official statement that basically vindicated Mick of any drama, and yet SOMEHOW despite the response literally stating there was no internal drama going on and that Mick and Id had agreed on a Plan B were he not able to release tracks on schedule, the community STILL went for his throat like he'd thrown the Id team under the bus (which, reminder, the Doom community did, not Mick).
    And being a Killer Instinct fan this shit is so fucking frustrating to watch because you can immediately tell who only knew about Mick because of Doom. All the things they accused him of were so out of character. Even during development, he was commenting on how certain tracks like Riptor's came out a little stale because he'd allocated more time to Aganos and wished he could give them a do-over. The man is pretty humble and the first five minutes of this video reminded me of that given he goes RIGHT INTO his mistakes before anything else.
    Post recent events edit: I was wrong to defend Id in the slightest. Marty did literally everything wrong and Mick wasn't just innocent in this situation, he was the victim.

    • @CribbsTV
      @CribbsTV 3 года назад +2

      As much as I love Mick and his work, this is absolutely not the case.
      What actually ended up really burning Mick was how he effectively through Chad under the bus and then went completely radio silent while fans started making assumptions and dogpiling him instead of simply coming out and setting the record straight.
      Mick definitely does shoulder a lot of the blame for how that went down due to dropping what were essentially bombshells in random reply tweets and then going MIA while the internet freaked out instead of clearing the air.

    • @ddublu
      @ddublu 3 года назад +1

      wtf are you on? it's so weird seeing sensible comments on the internet. get outta here and come back if you just wanna axe some people just for the satisfaction of it. you really don't get the spirit of this whole thing...

    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn 3 года назад +18

      @@CribbsTV This assumes he's at all responsible for assumptions people make or drama they create.
      Mick didn't fabricate anything. In what were originally private messages to fans, all he said was "I wouldn't have made it that way" which is literally him voicing a creative difference and only an asshole would assume the worst about that statement, and then "I probably won't be working with Id again", which is just stupid to assume means he has an issue with Id. Since Killer Instinct he's done 5 games for Bethesda; Prey, two Wolfenstein titles, and two Doom games. He wanted to do something else and he's not obligated to them, plus he'd already been doing stuff with Bring Me the Horizon and Atomic Heart and vocal about wanting to do something akin to Killer Instinct again.
      It was literally the fans who went ballistic and attacked people AND THEN took no accountability for it. It was genuinely one of the most embarrassing things the community has done. But please, tell me why a grown man is obligated to herd a bunch of internet randos who were screenshotting his conversations and theory crafting on their own time. Mick and Id did nothing wrong, this was entirely fan crafted outrage.

      yea this so much. i don't believe Id software for a second either. everyone just took martys word as gospel and used it as permission to abuse and blame mick.

      it's fishy AF.

    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn 3 года назад +3

      @@ddublu I'm not sure if that was directed at me or Cribbs, but I've loved Mick's work for the last decade and watching people go nuts over something that literally didn't happen and attack both a man and a company I loved over it was a stupidly frustrating experience, and the community was never held accountable for it.
      Killer Instinct (the reboot) is now old enough to warrant nostalgia and for years I've been directing newer fans of Mick Gordon's work to this game because most people think he's just "Metal Man" because of the Doom titles. I used to blast Warlord and Polemos back in my Junior year in Highschool to expose people to this music most people would never even hear because it came from a fighting game. I still blast I'm Back because it oozes the lost soul of Rap Hip Hop and more people should be taking notes from it. I don't want to hear anything about "spirit", my argument is literally about people lacking spirit in favor of vitriol.

    46:39 this is beautiful. It's like a microcosm of TJ Combo's story - looking at his own cybernetics and deciding It's not working, it's not worth it. He's running out of time, he's past his prime, but he needs to make a difficult decision. And so he "throws it all out and tries again", he rips out his cybernetics to get one more authentic attempt. That crazy gamble worked for him, and it worked for Mick and Omega too

    Killer Instinct (2013) was initially released when I was about a month into taking guitar lessons. Mick Gordon's OST for it was the work I first came to know from him, and so it came as a pleasant surprise that he was gonna do the music for the 2016 Doom game (which, by the way, I'm sure we all had an inkling that parts of "Inferno" got put into "BFG Division"). I think Seasons 1 and 2 stand out as some of my favorite stuff I heard from Mick, because it was such a large collaborative effort with numerous cultures, other artists, even people from the fighting game community and the Microsoft and Iron Galaxy employees who contributed to "Polemos." I owe it to tracks such as "Hinnamatoom," "Inferno," and "Type-03" that I got into metal music. The mixing of influences from other genres and cultures was really cool to me, even before I got into bands that do the same thing, like Faith No More, Twelve Foot Ninja, Skindred, and others. I once commented on a video featuring Fulgore's theme with an inquiry on how the guitars were played so fast, to which someone answered, "Mick Gordon's best friend is his guitar," or something to the effect.
    I'm really glad you reached out to all these people to get their views and stories on how composing KI (2013)'s outstanding tunes went. I can do nothing else but appreciate them a hell of a lot more. I think I'll have to listen back on "Touch Me and I'll Break Your Face" to find all those sayings of "bitch."

It's great to see how all these tracks came about, and I'm so glad i went to that PAX panel where Mick recorded the crowd. At the time we were all confused with what was happening but then a few months later, hearing the chanting in-game was one of the coolest things ever, as a gamer and a KI fan.

    Absolutely adore this soundtrack.
    Hilariously, I DO say that Herald of Gargos is my personal favorite, and a huge, huge part of it is those final sections of the song. The "reworking" of Jago's theme into its corrupted, unleashed state is fantastic throughout, but from the section that's more calm at the end right up until the walls come crashing down and song just goes full throttle till the end of the "Killer Instinct" combo section... that part gives me chills every time. It really sounds like someone having one final look at their life, before just letting loose and having fun at the end of the world. No more tomorrow, no more constraints. It's the perfect embodiment of someone embracing the apocalypse as a final opportunity, and I could not love it more.

    Having the crowd at Pax record a segment of the audio is awesome. I had a similar situation albeit much later in the games life but, when Shadow Lords came out, I found some ways to break it horrendously with some of the buffs, consumables and guardians you could use. So much so that after sharing some clips James Goddard reached out to me and I got to personally chat with him on Skype for a couple hours. Killer Instinct being one of my absolute favorite games of all time since childhood, best gaming moment of my life. After our chat quite a few changes came to Shadow Lords and he also gave me a couple of codes to games he developed as we both had a liking for shmups. It's something I won't ever forget. Just wish I had a picture or something to put with my collection that I got to influence my favorite game.

    I was hoping Mick would talk about Herald of Gargos, as that was my favorite track after listening to the OST version. Hits harder than the in-game version, has IMO the better updated version of Gargos' theme than the actual Gargos theme itself in season 3, and all those additions (especially that 'sad' part) set the song even further apart from Jago's theme.
    And the fact it was done in a very short amount of time, in crunch no less, really impressed me all the more. Sad that Mick had to leave after finishing season 2, but he left KI with a bang. Thank you for all this.

    Its funny hearing Mick talking about aspects that made those tracks specific to a character cuz I remember when I first got the killercuts album I was listening to it and every track didn't had a character name assigned but you knew by the sound and arrangament to what character that track belongs. Its awesome to see and hear how he went into that process to bring it back to life with a new and more modern sound at the same time praising Robin Beanland`s work. Thats a true music composer there. My respects to Mick Gordon👏🏾

    I sadly missed the time when KI came out. Was not really into fighting games at that time and just got back into them through Maximilian Dood.
    The KI soundtrack is next to Marvel vs Capcom 2 (nostalgia and jazz), my to go to soundtrack. I listen to it at work, driving the car, using it as fight music for TTRPG's.
    But there is one thing that makes it really special to me. I can feel the love and appreciation of every single track. It just picks me up and I sometimes get teary eyes because of the raw emotion that are transported through the sounds.
    This soundtrack is my personal masterpiece. Something that I wish could be reproduced, but I'm just glad that it happened.
    Thank you a lot for this documentation. Now I'm gonna go cry some manly tears while listening to Polemos.
